This workshop is intended to benefit laboratory technicians, QA & QC personnel, technical sales and service personnel as well as those individuals who are in industry related product or marketing specialty positions.
Selected Workshop Topics
PSA Background & History: A brief history of the PSA industry will be presented starting with the early use of pitch and/or rubber for medical application, through the start of tape coating and founding of the liner label product business up to today.
Types of Products: We will look at the various product formats that are used in the PSA industry including single face, double face, transfer products, and specialty products. We will review definitions, constructions, and typical uses.
Adhesive Types: Included in this section will be permanent, removable, and various specialty adhesive types. We will cover the typical adhesive delivery systems including solvent, water based, hot melt and 100% solids systems.
Adhesive Compounding: Adhesive compounding and formulating information will be covered for solvent, hot melt and 100% solids systems particular attention will be given to water based systems including polymers, resins and additives.
Coating Methods: We will review the various types of coating methods in use in the PSA industry discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each. This section will include rod coating, various roll and gravure methods. A new, special presentation on slot die and EDI coating methods is also included.

This comprehensive course will provide the attendee with an overview of PSA technology and develop proficiency in the implementation and performance of standard PSA testing procedures, data acquisition and evaluation and reporting through a hands-on approach. This workshop serves as an accelerated training module and is aimed at new testing, research and development, laboratory and QA/QC technicians. Training is formatted to mirror the protocol of the Chemsultants Inc. laboratory which is A2LA accredited. All major types of PSA test equipment will be reviewed in depth.
Selected Workshop Topics
PSA Products / PSA Adhesives: In these two sections we will present a comprehensive overview of the various PSA product formats ( single faced, double faced..) and PS adhesive types. Covered are adhesive types ( permanent, removable) adhesive technology ( natural rubber, SBR, acrylic) and adhesive delivery systems (solvent, water based, hot melt).
Overview PSA Physical Properties: We will discuss, in detail, the basic properties of pressure sensitive adhesives including : peel adhesion, tack, shear and release. Factors affecting each of these properties and their interactions will be covered, as will the various Modes of Failure that will be utilized to evaluate test results / adhesive performance.
Review of Standard Test Methods: In this section a review of the relevant standard test methods will be undertaken. We will review both 90° and 180° peel adhesion tests, loop and probe tack tests, room temperature and S.A.F.T. shear tests and liner release tests. The ASTM, PSTC and TLMI standard test methods will serve as the basis for this section.
Sampling: Both sample considerations and sample preparation for testing will be covered. Hands on sample prep and test panel preparation will be done by each attendee.
Testing Procedure: Each attendee will be required to perform several standard replicate series for each test method from sample preparation through test sequencing and data collection and analysis. Emphasis is placed on a complete exposure to real world PSA testing procedures that will be meaningful when the attendee returns to his or her workplace.
Test Equipment: The standard equipment specified for each test method will be discussed in this section. Major equipment covered will include AR-1000/1500, LT-1000, PT-1000, various shear test banks, TT-1100, and the EZ Lab Software system. Additional equipment that will be reviewed based on attendee interest includes HSU-1000, HSR-1000, HL-101 and HLC-101/1000 The three main areas of information presented will include 1] function of each piece of equipment, 2] measurement criteria , 3] calibration, 4] use / results of testing.
Review and Evaluation: A comprehensive review / evaluation will be given to each attendee upon completion of the workshop. The intention of this review is to ensure that each attendee is minimally proficient in all areas covered in this workshop including equipment operation.
Cost: $759 Dates: August 19-20, 2008
